You began your career as a cancer researcher. What inspired you to move into Scientific Services?
It was less about inspiration and more about opportunity. During my postdoctoral research in San Diego, I developed a passion for microscopy. We pioneered techniques that allowed us to watch proteins move around cells in real time, helping us better understand how cancer cells die. Back in Australia, we used the same technology to uncover how immune cells kill cancer cells, and I became a go-to person for timelapse microscopy. When research funding became increasingly uncertain and an opportunity arose to lead the microscopy facility at QIMR Berghofer, I took a difficult but rewarding step. It allowed me to use my skills to support many researchers instead of focusing on a single research program.
