Dr Elizabeth McDonald

About

Elizabeth has over ten years of experience using flow cytometry techniques in a research lab environment. Her experience as an immunologist in both the autoimmune and cancer settings have provided a solid foundation for her career as a flow cytometry analyst at QIMR Berghofer. Elizabeth completed a PhD focusing on the cell biology of chronic myeloid leukemia at the University of Liverpool (2010) before undertaking a post-doctoral position at the University of Glasgow. Here she designed multiple multi-parameter flow cytometry panels for clinical trials investigating the immunophenotype of peripheral blood and human colonic mucosa cells in patients with a variety of autoimmune disorders, as well as developing her cell sorting knowledge. Following this, Elizabeth moved to QIMR Berghofer to study the effects of neoadjuvant immunotherapies in mouse models of metastatic melanoma and breast cancer, where she continued to utilize flow cytometry extensively. During this time, Elizabeth also expanded her flow cytometry knowledge to include spectral flow cytometry, receiving training on the Cytek Aurora and designing and optimising four panels (20-26 colours) to investigate immune targets of interest in multiple cell subsets.

Elizabeth has meticulous attention to detail and an enthusiasm for QA/QC that is necessary in her role as Quality Coordinator. During her time at the University of Glasgow, Elizabeth was responsible for writing SOPs for a multi-centre clinical trial, as well as for the coordination of sample shipments to and from Glasgow. She also trained other researchers in clinical research procedures and the importance of adhering to the optimized protocols. During her time at QIMR Berghofer, she was responsible for writing the Lab Manual and trial-specific SOPs related to a cutaneous SCC clinical trial. Since joining the Flow Cytometry and Imaging Facility at QIMR Berghofer she has been responsible for the writing and reviewing of SOPs, logs and training forms necessary for securing and maintaining accreditation.
